Subject: Aron Ruvimovich
Dear All,

This is some kind of news update about Aron Ruvimovich.
My wife (Anna, nee Kosaya) and I were in StPb for a week in
early November and talked to Galina Isaakovna, and then I saw
ARM.

He has had a very bad year. His eyesight was getting worse
("katarakta", as far as I know), and it must have been really
very difficult for him, as reading had always been one (and
increasingly, the only) of his pleasures in life. Originally
he was due for an operation in the Fedorov Centre in the spring.
There were some complications from an eye infection and his other
health problems. The operation had to be postponed and, to make
things worse, he broke his leg ("bedro"). While he was still in
hospital, his wife, Evgeniya Gavrilovna, had a stroke. They were
both recovering at the begining of summer, and AR had started to
walk, although it was (and still is) painful. Then Evgeniya
Gavrilovna had a second stroke and died...

At the very end of October Lena (AR's daughter) arranged for an
eye operation in the Fedorov Centre in Kupchino. And this is were
I saw AR and talked to him the day after the operation. Hopefully,
things were getting better and he should have been out of hospital
around 5 or 6 November.

It would be good if someone could give ARM a phonecall, or may be
even visit him, to say hello and wish him a Happy New Year...

Gleb

PS. It's a month and a half since I learnt all the above, and
I hope I got the all the facts right.

Subject: M.L.Shifman's trip re-scheduled
Hi guys,

I have just communicated with Mihail Lvovich.
He is truly grateful to everyone who has responded to the call,
and he strongly intends to visit the New World.

At the same time, for some private reasons, he asks for a
postponement of his journey, for several months.

He will not be able to visit us this spring, but let us hope
we see him later this summer (in August?). ML has not yet given
any definite dates; but, once again, he strongly intends to accept
our invitation.

So, this is only a temporary delay, and we should go on
with planning the structure of his trip, and with collecting funds
for it.

As agreed, Alla Kapralova is the Treasurer of the project, so let
us send her our contributions. If something comes up and the trip
doesn't work out (which may happen if, say, the Consulate refuses
ML a visa), then all the collected funds may be simply passed to
ML as our collective present.

So let us assume, for now, that we are collecting $$ for a present
to ML. As it stands now, the present is to be in the form of a
trip.

Many thanks,
                          Michael Efroimsky
PS
I do not want even to try to nominate how much the
monetary contribution should be. Let everyone determine
it themselves, the importance of event taken into account.

Regarding the messages from Alina Roshal and Eugene Fouxman:

Gospoda,

In case you so strongly insist on ML's visit to California,
let us, at least, limit it to one megapolis solely, either it be
LA or SF. Naturally, everyone wants to meet with ML. Still, we
must give priority to his interests and to his special
circumstances.

As you may remember, in 1999 ML underwent a very serious surgery
with major complications. His state of health seems to be better
than it was then. Still, I would urge you to be cautious. He
very quickly gets tired and, above that, each re-acclimatisation
will be quite a problem for him.

May I suggest that all the California alumnae get in contact with
one another and decide where he goes, if he goes to California.

In that case, we may arrange the programme like this: he arrives
to Boston, has rest at his friends' place for two or three days.
Then goes for several days to DC. From there he has a flight to
California, and then flies back to Boston. Then, after having some
rest, he returns home.

Guys, I don't want to dwell more on ML's health issues, but I hope
you will understand my point. Let's put it that way: he very
easily gets tired.

Many thanks,

Dear All,

I have the pleasure to remind you that M L Shifman's jubilee
is approaching. On the 20th of October he will be 65.

Therefore, it is now time to discuss his planned visit to the US.

I have had preliminary discussions with some of the 30-ka alumnae,
and the idea received their most positive support. Here are the
names of several people who have already expressed their interest
in participating in the project:

Vladik Kreinovich <vladik@cs.utep.edu>,
Eugene Lifshits <liefe@mskcc.org>,
Alexander Elentukh <Elentukh@aol.com>,
Alla Kapralova <KapralovaA@iconus.com>,
Daniel Romanovsky <rmovsky@h2.hum.huji.ac.il>,<rmovsky@lycos.com>,
Anatoly Katyshev <AKatyshev@home.com>,
Galina D. Palace (Dvortsova) <GPalace@excite.com>,

(As far as I remeber, it was Galina Dvortsova who coined the
idea of Shifman's journey.)

I wish to thank all these people. Hope, many more will want
to participate.

I discussed this with Mihail Lvovich, and he was most
enthusiastic. He has appointed the following time interval as
optimal: from the 10 of March through the 5 of April. He has also
requested to minimise the amount of flights and to maximise the
gaps in between. (This is due to his health condition. He easily
gets tired, and above this, may have difficulties with re-
acclimatisation.)

Mihail Lvovich would prefer to spend most part of these vacations
in Boston, with a couple of short trips to other places
(Washington? California?)

Our programme for him should include a full package:

a. his visa cost
b. his travel expences
c. some "pocket money"
d. a reasonably inexpensive (though reasonably good) video camera

Guys,Is anybody there who would want to make an Organising
Committee? I presume, we shall need a chief organiser and a
treasurer.

And, needless to say, we shall need donations.

To make the discussion open to all, may we hold it on the
Bulletin Board, not through e-mail conversations.

Thank you indeed for your attention.

Subject: T. Kursish

I went to Russia this March for my math teacher's, I. Verebeichik,
anniversary.
I saw T. Kursish at his celebration. She was in America last summer; she
visited several cities.

She told me that she lost all her pictures (something was wrong with the
camera) after Seattle and she asked for help.

Unfortunately I don't know very much about people she was with after
Seattle. May be these people have some pictures and can share with her ?

Thanks,

We kept in touch for years after graduation from 30ka.

Michael Efroimsky (1979, 4) at efroimsk@fas.harvard.edu:

Subject: 70-letie L N Chichkinoj
Dear fellow alumnae,

I am glad to inform you that on the 28th of January 2001 our dear
Lidija Nikolaevna Chichkina had ner 70th birthday. I am ashamed,
though, by the fact that the event went virtually unnoticed.
Well, Lidia Nikolaevna never produced any winners of international
olympiads and contests, and she herself has never been awarded with
titles or money prizes. She has always been in the shadow of her
brilliant and famous colleagues.

There exists, however, another part of the story, part that makes
Chichkina, at least in my eyes, a real unsung hero. Very few of
us know of her family problem: through all her life she has been a
single mother nurturing a mentally retarded daughter. She has been
living all her life under this burden: taking care of the mentally
ill girl in the morning, going to school (where she saw crouds of
arrogant prodigy kids), and then returning back home to her mentally
ill girl. In this situation many would yield to irritation and envy
caused by this dramatic contrast. Instead, Lidia Nikolaevna has
always accepted our successes as if those were of her own children.
And she generously forgave us our arrogance towards her subject,
Geography, that has never been regarded prestigious by us.

To begin with, may I suggest that as many of us as possible pay
her the tribute of respect by calling and congratulating her. Her
telephone is 812 - 224 43 90, and I am sure that an avalanche of
our phone calls will be the most valuable present to her.

Switching to a more practical aspect, may I remind you that she and
her daughter are surviving (or trying to survive) on the teacher's
meek salary (salary that has never been amended by whatever Soros or
other prize) and the disabled daughter's pension. Could our Club collect
some $$ for Lidia Nikolaevna in the year of her jubilee? I
personally would be happy to contribute to that.

Many thanks,
