Can't agree more.
We are not in position to have an objective opinion (as if it is 
possible to have objective opinion on such a matter) here in US.
And also these e-mails get broadcasted to all of us. I would

I do not support any civil war in any country. About "educated 
Russian sociaty"...As far as I know, from my highly educated 
friends still living in Russia, they are just sick and tiered of 
all these Russian Government's political games. If anybody has 
any doubts that the real goal of this war is to take power over 
the Chehnya's oil??

I do not trust that Government. Unfortunatly the truly educated 
and progressively thinking part of the Russian society never had 
much influence on domestic policy.

I daresay, it has.  For many people it's not human rights or 
national unity that is at stake; you have to realize that if you 
leave on Kashirskoe shosse in Moscow you'll approve of anything, 
whether you call yourself intelligencija or not.  And please, you 
don't need to tell me that bobming Grozny is not the way to deal 
with the explosions in Moscow; first, I agree with it, and 
second, try explaining it to people whose house has been blown 
up.  It's very easy to exercise humanism from the United States, 
but put yourself in the shoes of those who've been leaving in 
fear since August, and you may understand their feelings.

I would suggest to refrain from discussing political matters
on this page, especially since these issues can divide the
30tka graduates. I would like to note only that the question
was to the RUSSIAN educated community. As I can judge basing
on the graduates listings, all people who reply in fact belong
now the US educated community (except for one case when the
country of residence is not listed but the e.mail address is
more like the US one). I am not going to give my opinion on
the subject for the same reason. I am not a member of the
Russian community already for some time, but do not find this
fact especially remarkable.

I seriously doubt that this war has serious support among the 
intelligencia in Russia either. It's hard to justify killing 
children, women and the elderly for the cause of national unity. 
If it weren't Russia and its nukes my boy Clinton would have been 
all over it by now bombing the crap of out Moscow. 

This is very good; I can't find better words.
I don't support it, and I am not a member of the educated

Hi,

Various sources of US mass media (CNN, New York Times, Russian 
Radio) all agree that the Chechen war has a popular support in 
Russia. My understanding is that the official justification of 
that support is that the goals sometimes do justify the means. 
That is, the casualties among civilians are a necessary by-
product of the war for a common good (which is getting rid of 
Chechen bands). 

Can somebody help me with the understanding if the majority of 
the 30-ka graduates support it too, or an educated part of a 
Russian society thinks differently?

С большим сожалением узнал о кончине Миши Гусарова. Очень хочется
выразить соболезнование его маме и всем, кто близко знал Мишу.

К сожалению, я помню Мишу только по школе. Я помню, что это 
был очень талантливый парень и даже нам, десятиклассникам, 
рассказывали о нем. И вот его не стало.

К своему ужасу, я понял, что для меня утонул 16-летний подросток, 
ведь я ничего не знаю о тех 25  мишиных годах, прошедших после 
школы. Может быть люди, знавшие Мишу, расскажут о нем.

Да и вообще было бы неплохо узнать истории наших выпускников. Как
складывалась и как сложилась их жизнь после школы. Может быть кто-
то захочет рассказать о себе. Мне кажется, это можно сделать 
прямо через этот лист рассылки. Так нам легче будет представить 
друг друга и проще поддерживать контакты.

Жаль, что эти мысли навеяла мне кончина Миши Гусарова, ведь можно

The cost of the tickets is $301. Meals and lodging are on me. I am

them is out-of-town-but-maybe-coming). I guess seeing V.L. is not 
on a top of people's "To Do" lists (maybe because of the tax 
season). Anyway, I am writing this to let everybody know that I 
talked to a man in charge of Russian delegation and got his 
approval for V.L.'s "abduction". I'll keep everybody posted about 
the plans and hope more people will want to see V.L.

To former V.L.Il▓in▓s pupils, living in the area of Big New York.

As you might know, The Best Teacher of Russia is coming to 
America. He is to participate in Russian-American teacher 
conference in Miami 4/28 √ 5/7. For the last few weeks we (he and 
I) were trying to arrange his early arrival or late departure 
with his re-routing to New York before or after the conference. 
Unfortunately, his schedule (and Elvira) doesn▓t allow any extra 
days (the word from Elvira came last Friday √ I was waiting for 
it before posting this message). According to a preliminary 
schedule V.L. has, days between 5/2 afternoon and 5/5 afternoon 
should be pretty boring for him and he agreed to be abducted to 
New York during this period. Tomorrow (4/12) I▓ll try to reach 
the person in charge of Russian delegation in Moscow to make sure 
this wouldn▓t cause any problems (V.L. thinks it shouldn▓t be but 
we agreed that it is better to have it approved before we start 
planning the event).

Certainly, I could bring V.L. here, spend two days with him and 
ship him back to Florida, but I consider it unfair. I believe 
there are much more people who would like to have a share of him 
during these two days, who would agree to organize the gathering 
and, generally, participate physically and financially in the 
event.

If there are such people, I▓d like to hear from them ASAP. Please

 I. Informacija dlja teh, kto zhivet v Peterburge libo pojavitsja 
tam v blizhajshee vremja

 Oficial'noe "prazdnovanie" - 13 marta 1999 goda, subbota, 17:00. 
Sbor v 16:30. Mesto dejstvija: 30-ka (zdanie na ul.SHevchenko, 
23).
 Na pozdravlenie kazhdomu godu vypuska otvoditsja 10-15 minut.
 21 fevralja (voskresen'e, no shkola otkryta!) neploho by 
sobrat'sja i obsudit' scenarii, vykinut' povtory, v obssem - 
provesti chernovuyu rabotu.
 26 fevralja (pjatnica) v 18:00 - repeticija na scene.

 Pozdravlenija ot vypuskov - v svobodnoj forme (chasse drugih pri 
obsuzhdenii mel'kali slova "literaturnaja kompozicija"). 
Privetstvuetsja ob'edinenie pokolenij, tak kak vremeni malo (~35
