Hi, folks!
I talked with several people who don't have an access to the Internet.
They would like to come to NY, but they concern about a date. These
people should drive from Cleveland, Detroit, and other distant
cities. The forecast for the coming winter is the same as for previous
one: snow. It is enough trouble to drive 9 and more hours, but to do it
during the winter is almost impossible. Also I agree with Marina Obraztsova
that teachers and folks from Russia need more time to prepare for a visit.
I suggest to set a date in April. (Teachers have a Sping break.)
It is also nice to have some activities outside, and April is a perfect
season for that. Galina.
P.S. I tried to send this message to the mailing list twice and got a message "User unknown".

Yuli Lyanda-Geller (1979-3) at lyandage@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu:
Subject: Re: visa types and Consular questions
I would like to introduce a slight correction to the previous message.
Visas are issued on the reciprocal basis by the US and Russian consular
officials. Therefore, there are three types of visas. A one-year--visa
costs indeed 150$ (but this visa is not one-time visa).
A three-year--visa cost is 450$, but, most importantly,
a single-visit--visa costs 40$. The latter one is precisely the visa
that is neccesary for visiting the US once.
At the Consulate, for the B-type (tourist) visa one has just to prove
one's coming back to Russia (family, property), and then visas are issued
without any problems. Opposing illegal immigration is the only criterium
used by the US Consular officials.
It is neccesary to perform letters of invitation for our teachers and
schoolmates extremely thoughtfully.
Regards.

Subject: about visiting US
Hi Everybody,
I spent somr time reading this board before decided to write. As I am staying in SPB
I have an idea what is to go to the US from here.
First of all one needs a passport. If he has it then it is a good time to apply for US visa. There are two sorts of US
visitor's visas: one-visit visa for $150 and three-year visa with unlimited visits for $450.Plus $20 for
application (which is not returned if they refuse to give a visa). And applying for visa to US Consulate is a sort of
lottery - many people tryed to count out the criteria they in Consulate use for it and nobody succed. But in
any case it takes about a week to solve (positive or negative) a visa problem.
And there is usually no problem with airplane tickets.
I hope this information could be useful for you when considering the invitation of
anybody from SPb to your meeting.
I wish you good luck with this meeting and feel strongly jealous that I am not able to join

Hey, that's me again.
Just wondering - why January?
Actually, it's OK with me - I spent four years living in
NY City, and I still have a part of my family up there, so
I never mind to visit them extra time. But I don't think
we give a slight opportunity to anybody from Russia
(including teachers) to get prepared for the meeting.
They cannot just buy tickets and jump into the plane like
piece of cake. It takes to get an invitation from the USA
resident, get visa, get appropriate passport, and God only
knows what else it takes. At least we have to have a list
of those who would be ready to move through all this stuff.
Anyway, no matter what's the result of this discussion - I'm

Well, see you sooner or later.

I hope that some of us in SPB can take care of this -
all teachers should know they have the Email.
2. To Victor Dvortsov, about meetng in NYC.
I've talked to a few people about preposed meeting in the
beginning of January. I already know 3(!) who want to
participate but won't be around in US till last week
of Jan. Question (from them): can we stick to, say,
last weekend in January? It might be less convenient
for teachers because of vocation time...

Subject: reunion: follow-up
I'm glad to see that the idea of reunion is close to
the hearts of many. Thanx to all of you who wrote to
me or supported/opposed it on the bulletin board. NY
seems perfect place to me as I live on Long Island;
it is also leading in the polls, beating SPb and
Boston. In fact, nobody said there can be no more
then one school reunion per century; those of us who
happen to live at this side of the Atlantic can meet
in NY, whether there'll be a celebration in SPb (that
I, for many reasons, have so much desire but so little
chance to attend) or not.
As for the timing; how about the beginning of the next
year, say, second week of January? As soon as we agree
on the place (NY?) and time, let's start phone-calling
campaign; hard to believe, but there is still many folks
without email access, even sredi `programmistov-v%chislitelei
3-go razrjada'. Then, hopefully, we'll be able to estimate
how many people will attend, hence how large a facility
do we need for the occasion, and whether we can afford to
invite teachers or not (I'm almost sure we'll be able to
do that if we accept Len's $100 ticket price; let me know
what you think about it).
Please post your comments/suggestions on the board, along
with the estimate of the number of your email'less friends
who you think would like to attend.

Hi everybody!
My first thought - if it has to happen in the USA - no place is
better than NY City since it's somehow in the middle (volks from
let's say Boston will have to drive 4 hrs south, for me it's 4 hrs
north). Still I'm not sure people from Russia gonna make it at all.
Anyway, it's a good idea (from Galina Palace) to split ourself by
graduate year. She is also half-right with 'teachers' issue since
it's certainly impossible to invite all of them, but I believe that
such great guys like for example Shifman who spent with the school
actually the whole life - worth to be with us for the event.
Good luck to all of you.

Subject: Get together in NYC
Hi, "american" folks!
I assume we have 2 opposite ideas about our meeting now.
1. get together in NYC
2. go to SP and meet where
Let's be realistic - all of us who live (and work) in US have a very slim chance
to manage a brief vocation (say, one week)at the same time to fly to SP.
Yes, we'll try to be there for 100 anniverary next year - but even this
great occasion will gother (you'll see!) next to none of us, "americans".
On the contrary, the idea to meet in NYC seems to me quite real.
Everyone can spend one weekend there or, maybe, in Boston. We defenitely
have important matters to talk over, we also will take some pleasure out of
good chat, good food, familiar faces etc., won't we?
My suggestion is: let's ask Viktor Dvortsov ( the autor of the idea , correct me if I'm wrong)
to do what he suggested: set the account, set the date and collect the "reservations" along with required
fee ($ 100 or $ 200 ?).
My best wishes to all of you.

Subject: Re: School anniversary
In addition to the previous remark by Eugene Kogan about the first
graduation of the class with the extensive learning of Physics and
Mathematics in 1967, I would like to cite a message from the earliest
graduate in our list, Michael Abkin ( I hope he does not object )
"In the late 50's Nikita Kruschev's administration as usual borrowing
ideas from the West started just another school reform: it went from
10-year to 11-year schooling. As part of this concept a regular 10-year
school was split into 2 stages: 8-year primary (from 1rst to 8th grade)
and 3-year high school (9-11th grades) with only a primary being a
mandatory education. On top of this, these high schools practiced
'special' education - so along with a high school diploma a graduate
would acquire a 'specialty' whether it was a 'tokar pervogo rasryada'
or electrician, etc.
High school #30 was the first school in Leningrad to specialize in
training of computer programmers (a proximity to Math-Mech was perhaps
a major factor). Right after that a couple of other schools followed,
notably #239... .1963 was the first graduation year of this special
'programmist-vychislitel tretyego rasryada' group of people. Most of
#30 school graduates were not computer programmers but other
'specialists'. Out of approximately 300 or so graduates there were just
about 15 of [computer programmers]."
Now about the Centennial. Of course, the date is nice.
But, fellows, you know, our school is not in that building
already for 20 years. There were no 80th annversary and no 90th
anniversary. I was told by that there were no anniversaries during
the time when the school was in the old building. Of course, the school
may decide to count starting from 1897 at any time. To tell you my
opinion, I find it really amusing that every educational institution
in Russia wants to originate from Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy.
I think the decisive word on the recognition of the Centennial
should be heard from old 30th school building graduates.
Regards.

he took a new class (9), they were 15 years old. He taught, they
graduated, he took new class, they were 15 years old, etc. He said he
is happy to be a teacher in 30 school. He is proud of the 30 school
"spirit". Really, sometimes a graduate of 30 school can be recognized
for his speech style... Next autumn 30 school will celebrate 100-year
anniversary. The school administration is going to issue a book of
memoirs. (Naturally it is the age of the building right across
"Vasiliostrovskaya" metro station. As M.L. said, the first class with
extensive learning of physics and mathematics was in 1967.) I think it
is a beautiful idea. Lets write memoirs, folks!

From one response to my question, I realized that the tone of my message

Subject: fund?
Hi, friends.
I would like to start a discussion on this mailing list with a rhetorical
question: 30ka alumni support fund: is it a good idea?
On the bulletin board there were a few posts lately, all of them in favor of
that idea. However, it's not so obvious. There are some questions that whoever
wants to create that fund should answer:
1. Why fund? Does 30ka need any money?
2. What official status the fund would have (if any)?
3. Would it function through the school's administration; if not, then how?
4. Teacher's bonuses: how to distribute them? If unequally, wouldn't it create
an unhealthy atmosphere of competing with and envying each other?
5. Buying computers/equipment: is it needed? Maybe it's not the money that's
needed but administrative effort to buy these things. Certainly, the fund would
not help in that.
...
I understand that we are far away from realization of this idea. But, I still
think that it's worth while to discuss it.
If you want to send a reply to the mailing list, make sure the message is
addressed to milevin_30ka@indiana.edu.

ML

As Michael Levin (1989,5) noted, it takes time to watch

Of course, there is nothing special with the 30-tka list.
I am using the URL-minder for other sites of interest too.
This works fine with any WWW site except very volatiles ones.

with an old one).

Subject: Hearing aid for A.R.
A couple of days ago Sergey Liberman posted a question about
the results of the "campaign" to send a hearing aid to
A.R.Maiselis. I think I can describe the current status of
the process.
The first hearing aid was purchased. There were many problems
including the fact that someone who was asked to deliver the
unit to Russia simply lost it. At the end Oleg Alshansky, who
managed the "campaign", bought a similar unit on his own money
and Aron Ruvimovich received it last September. According to
Galine Semenovna Klimovitskaya, the hearing aid helped him.
This year there has been a second "campaign". The second
hearing aid was purchased. This time involved were mostly, but not
only, 1979-81 graduates.
We again had many strange problems, like the fact the unit was
brought to Russia and back. Finally it was supposed to be back
in SpB a week ago. As soon as I get a confirmation that it has
been actually delivered to Aron Ruvimovich I will post it.

Hi, everybody!
I believe, acceptable meeting place for 30tka Graduates should
be St-Pb, not NYC, or smth else:
1) After all, the most of Graduates stay in Russia, especially
in St-Pb
2) The same as above regarding teachers
3) Frankly speaking, an St-Pb resided Graduate would
encounter 10 times more problems while going for the
meeting to NYC, than vice versa. (Air tickets, visas, etc, etc)
4) The same as above regarding teachers, replacing "10 times"
with "30 times"
5) Try to imagine a meeting of, let's say, one of NYC schools
Graduates, let's say, in Sydney, Tokio, Paris, London, or even
Chikago. Can you imagine?
6) Don't you want to visit Alma Mater, and native town at least
once a century?
As to myself, I could visit NYC as well as St-Pb, since I stay
in "Other countries". But also think about the majority
of Graduates staying in St-Pb.
Furthermore, the American 30tka Community can undertake its own
"local" meeting somewhere in the USA any time they wish. (Maybe,
they already did it?)

I'd like to make some additional comments on the idea of fund.
I personally support the idea in general although there are
many technical detailes that are unclear.
We have at least 2 alternative plans that has been discussed
on BB:
1. to create a fund in some russian bank in SPB or
2. to create "virtual" fund via e-mail and use somebody here in US
as a treasury secretary to distribute the money. Both plans has
pluses and minuses.
It's more practical to have fund located in SPB, but it's unsafe
to use any russian bank for this.
It's very convinient and safe to do it here in US but then how and
by whom this money will be delivered to recepients? And who will decide
on how to use this money?
As we know , the major source of financial support usually is NOT an
individual contributions but donations from organizations. If we will be
able to get some, then , we will need to have a legal "face" to distribute
the money, as well as to deal with school administration and some other
burocracy (30-dka is a state school)
Most of these questions could be solved if we could
organize our activity, i.e we need to establish an alumni association
with elected council.:-(
And we will need to find a graduate (or better - several) in
Piter who will represent our association in Russia. I think this is
possible.
So, the major question that I would like to ask everyone -
shell we organize ourselves in alumni association? With the membership
fee - let say a $100/year? It would be a good start for the fund!
Finally, about proposed meeting: I think that the best idea is to meet
in SPB next summer to selebrate a 100 years of the school. Hopefully -
using the money of our own association!

Michael Levin (1989, 10-5) at milevin@cs.indiana.edu:
I have two proposals concerning the 30ka support fund:
1. By public consensus, we should designate several specific
categories toward which we want to contribute money. Misha
Ginzburg suggested several of them in the previous message.
I repeat some of them:
1) one time bonus to existing teachers
2) grant toward hiring a talented teacher
3) computers/internet for teachers/students
4) travel grants (for whatever reasons)
2. Once we agree on these categories, we can start e-mailing
pledges (who wants to contribute how much money toward what
category). We should designate someone (for treasurer) to recieve
and count these pledges and post the summary results in the end.
Then, depending on the results, we can decide how exactly to
spend the money and start sending checks to the treasurer.
Another point. To me it's awkward to discuss this on a web page.
Maybe it would make sense to create a 30ka mailing list?

Dear Friends,
Concerning the 30-ka alumni meeting: I dare to introduce a very
strange idea- what about to meet not in New York but in 30-ka in
St-Petersburg? I understand, that this sounds crazy for most of our
recent US residents, but in my opinion that is very natural point for
us to meet. By the way, I am sure, that most of our friends still
reside in Russia (even though according our Net statistic nearly half
of population is in States). This will also automatically solves the
problem invite-don't invite teachers, again, I am sure just minority
of them are abroad. Also our rather big Israely community ( Your
friend from there) and people from 'Others' probably could participate
in this event in such a case. In fact 100 anniversary is a great reason.
At the end: I don't know but suspect that Princenton alumni meet in
'Alma Mater' , don't they?

This is a nice idea to help our school, but we should be sure that
we are helping "old" 30-tka. Our old shool co-exists under the same

afford it! As far as I know , the atmosphere is quite different
from that in the "old school", as well as teachers salaries.
We should assure somehow that donations will drop in proper hands.

Hello everybody!
I'm back from St. Petersburg. I visited the school, had a long
conversation with V.L. Il'in and with some of our alumni. Here is the
summary I'd like to share with all of you.
1) The "old" 30-ka and its "old" teachers occupy just the 4th floor.
2) The 4th floor requires major repairs.
3) The teachers' team consists of the same giants (Maizelis, Kursish,
Shifman, Il'in, etc) who still fight for the very idea of our
school. However, they are getting older and older (e.g., Maizelis
is 75 (!)), and, unfortunately, "zameny ne vidno". There is a couple
of "young" teachers though.
4) The teachers' salaries are miserable.
5) Next year the school will celebrate its 100 anniversary.
I'd like to propose the idea of creation a special fund in St. Petersburg with
the purpose of supporting our school/teachers. The idea was already discussed
with a number of alumni and V.L. Il'in. The fund is going to be created in
the bank "Rekonstrukcii Razvitiya" under supervision of Evgeny Lotvinov

you all to send the feedback directly to my address in order not to pollute

Galina,
let me disagree with you about inviting our teachers.
There are teachers who have been working in the school for
ages - Kursish, Shifman, Il'in (he came to school the year you
graduated) are the ones who, I think, tought a majority of us.
Also, Ada L'vovna Vaysburd, who lives in Boston (I just talked
to her, she sent best regards to everyone) is well-known for
several generations of 30ka's alumni. And I don't think that the
price will be astronomical. Even a thousand dollars (a ticket +
some pocket money) will be 20 to 50 apiece, which is a decent
price for seeing your favorite teacher. Plus, we don't need to
make this charge mandatory. I feel that if we do want to see
our teachers, we can make a list, cast our votes, see how many
people are ready to pay the price and then decide.

Hi, folks!
I believe that 'reunion' is a great idea! I talked with my former

So, I think that we will have many more people for a reunion

But I disagree with the idea "to invite our teachers to the reunion."
We had different teachers. We cannot invite them for one day and send
back on the next day, and so on. (I am not even talking about money here.)
Another problem. We have people from 1965 to 1995 graduation years.
They belong to different generations. Maybe it makes more sense to divide
people by graduation years at least into three group: 1965-1975,
1975-1985, 1985-1995. What do you think? -Galina

board will not be a problem).
As for the technicalities, it depends on how many people

I think we could rent a restaurant. It will also be nice
if we can afford to invite our teachers from St.Petersburg,
at least some of them. (I don't think that's very realistic,
to be honest). But, it's worth trying. For example, we can
set a special bank account, and everyone who's interested
would send a contribution. Required minimum will cover
the meal, and all the extras, if any, can be spent on
teachers airfair (any reach men out there?)
Anyway, what do you think?

Hi everyone!
Hope you don't mind me joining in. I graduated from School 38
in its last year of existence - next year it merged with
School 30 and moved to the vicinity of "Priboi". I could not find
a list of the 38, and I am not equipped to create/maintain one,
so I'm wondering if you would not mind having us on your list.

I'm right here in the beautiful red-neck city of Dallas, Texas. (Hey, at least it's not as bad as Fort Worth!) I barely have time to shave, but I will take every effort to reply to your e-mails. (Yeah, as if anyone will really write!)
Anyway......

Hey, Fellas!
This is a cool page! In my opinion, it would even be better if
teachers would also participate. I 'd like to know how they are
doing and I'm sure that alimni would like to know it too. With
understanding that their (teachers') access to the Internet might
be somewhat limited, I believe that an effort should be taken.
Maybe those alumni who have direct contact with teachers would
help in this matter.
Thanks a lot in advance,
Ilia Rosenberg

Hi!
I invite you to make your suggestions on developing 30-ka's
"Who is Who" book based on the information collected at this
moment. The data in it may concern following aspects of CV:
places, education, proffessional carrier, marriafe life etc.
Alone with just entertainment it should have some practical
worth by establishing a good name of the school worldwide (from
the professional level point of wiew, I mean) being a visit card
of present and further graduates.
As well, on this occasion allow me to express my extreme
grattitude to the creator and manager of this page - Boris
Kozintsev - which did the thing the others only spoke about.
With best regards,
Benjamin
