Subject: Keren-30 Club foundation
Dear friends!

Israeli graduates of the 30th and 38th schools decided to set
their own club. Official documents required to register
this club by Israeli authorities were signed in Haifa on
December 12, 1997 by supervision of lawyer Marina Heifets
(1973, b-38). Roman Fridlyand hosted the ceremony.

The formal club founders are:
Boris Samsonovich Medved (1977-90, Teacher),
Alexander Galper (1970, 7),
Roman Fridlyand (1973, b-38)
Anatoly Babushkin (1976, 2),
Yuri Shenderov (1980, 2),
Eli Kislyuk (1981, 7),
Benjamin Dysin (1991, 2).

We are expecting to receive final approvement from the
appropriate authorities in Jerusalem.

Some decisions:

- Every graduate of 30th Gymnasium (30/38 schools) and other
people concidering themselves related to it in some way can be
Club member. Members list is managing by the coordinator,
Eli Kislyuk (elikis@netvision.net.il).

Among club aims you can see:
- mutual help of the club members and related people;
- support of the SPb 30th Gymnasium's teachers, pupils and
graduates;
- cultural, educational and other activities;
- employment and informational support for club members and
related people in Israel.

- The annual fee for members is set to US$ 45 in 1998 in addition
to regular voluntary donations. The "Keren-30" Fund which was
established in May 1997 will be part of "Keren-30" Club.

By the way, the Hebrew word "keren" has a few different meanings:
"fund", "ray", "horn" etc.

Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year and best wishes to everybody!

On behalf of founders of "Keren-30" Club
Eli Kislyuk.

I suggest that we keep the money on a account as an
emergency funs, so we can quickly assignš money as there
is a real need.

Our experience with olimpiada Baltic Way shows that it takes
time to raise money, when such time may be critical to 30ka
image (what else but olimpiadas creates image of Mathematics
School?) or to life when we talk about medical assistance to
our teachers.

Probably its better to have an account in SPb, but it's
definitely more reliable to keep it in States, given there
are people in SPb who could advance cash.

Still I think it's not a bad idea to give 30 team some pocket
money on per-day basis.

Subject: millenium, centennial, gimnasium
Hello!

Although Boris is probably right that Centennial celebration is
relevant for gimnasium which happened to be in the old school
building, I think that any beautiful school like ours deserves to
originate from Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy :-).

Keeping such memories would be especially nice as it helps
not to mix american, english and translit in such words as
"gimnasium" as well as to be attentive to comma's, periods,
and spelling in our letters to the bulletin board - I agree with
Michael Levin.

Thanks,

Subject: Math team trip
After my phone conversation with Eugene Lotvinov, we decided that
we send US$ 500 as promised. Eugen could use US$ 350 for
additional payment for tickets. And our US$ 150 and some Eugen's
donation will be used for team's "ice cream + caffe" in
Copenhagen.

Let me advise to our american friends, though this money
($ 1,400) isn't ours.

You can establish some fund like ours or collect the money and
wait for next charity project for our school or for our teachers.
For instance, you could ask Marina and Eugen Lotvinov or
M.L Shifman or V.L.Il'in about school needs. Also example: you
can establish prize for the best student of the studying year.
The prize will be trip to US. You can find similar suggestion in
"Keren-30" web page. See Nick Morozov's opinion in our page.
A little more initiative, our dear americans...
We have more ideas than money (Senia Klebanov wrote me once
about "poor Israel") ;-)

But anyway, sorry for my advises. You pay - you decide.

Wishing good luck to you, american friends, and successful
results to the school team in Denmark.

Formally, we collected money for Olympiad and we must
ask for the permission to use it for something else or,
at least, give a chance to give up by e-mail if somebody
disagree. I don't think that it'll happened and assume
that we may use the same $1400.

$1400 for ice-cream is too much. When Senia wrote about
he meant "extra" $200. The rest may be used for something else.
Remember, some months ago the initial idea of Sasha Davidovich
and Misha Chepovetsky was to help our teachers. We still did
not do it.

The idea of Elena Ginzburg to establish the fund is attractive
too. In this case we need to decide where to keep it, in
Petersburg (closer to school) or in the United States
(more reliable). Do we have a lawyer among us? Probably,
this fund may be a noncommercial organization and donations
to it may cut the taxes.

Subject: I disagree
Let me disagree with Yuli and Michael. Both centennial
and millenium if understood literally do not make any
sense as applied to the school that originated in the sixties.

Ironically, millenium is a better term:

millenium n., pl. -niums or -nia [ModL < L
mille, thousand + annus, year (after L biennium):
see ANNUAL]
1. any period of 1,000 years [2000 B.C. through 1001 B.C.
   is the 2d millenium B.C.]
2. a 1,000th anniversary or its commemoration
3. Christian Theol. the period of 1,000 years during which
Christ will reign on earth: with the: Rev. 20:1-5
4. any period of great piece, prosperity, etc.;
   imagined golden age.
Webster's New World Dictionary, Third College Edition.

I would go for number 4. Centennial happens to lack this
meaning :)

If anybody is uncomfortable with a donation smaller than 50$ NO donation
is too small. 5-10-25 $ will also help.

amount (before October 29, in Russia it will be

I think it is enough to send e-mail to Senia.

Make your pledges by Oct 28 or so. Then people in Russia

this money (if it is not the total amount). If they say
yes (by Oct 30) then send your cheques to me.

My pledge is 50$.

Subject: Money for 30-ka math team's trip to Denmark
Dear friends,

As a coordinator of the Israeli 30ka support fund "Keren-30" I'd
like to inform you that I think to send 500 USD, if this
amount would be approved by most of participants of the Fund.
(I hope we won't have any disagreements from israeli 30niks.)
If it would be possible we are going to pass this money before
Oct 30, but we doubt that it could be realizeable.
If the way which was suggested by Vadim Kagansky (see previouse
messages on BB: to send the sum after Oct 30) is good for school
team, we will be able to pass the money on November 3-5.
I am still waiting from Eugene Lotvinov any response on my
message which I sent him yesterday.

In this opportunity, I congratulate all of 30niks (teachers,
pupils and graduates) on 30ka millenium anniversary on behalf
of all israeli graduates.

Best wishes,
Eli Kislyuk, coordinator
"Keren-30", the Israeli 30ka support fund.

Vadim Kagansky (1974, 7) at kagansky@math.berkeley.edu:

Subject: Money for30-tka team.
I have received e-mails from Bair Budaev, Yura Koblents-Mishke and Senia
Klebanov with additional information and some ideas. To summarize:
1. The cost of each banking transaction is, at least, $25.00 (in some
banks it may be up to $50) plus ~2% of the amount, so it makes no sense
to send less than $500 at a time.
2. There is no chance to receive money in Petersburg before October 30.
3. Probably, participants themselves or sponsors may find the necessary
amount in Petersburg to pay on time and we'll refund this money in some weeks.
In this case we must estimate the amount we can send and inform Lotvinov
(unfortunately, his e-mail does not respond but, I hope, it is possible to
see this Web side in Petersburg), teachers and participants. They'll decide
if it is O.K. and may they pay the rest if we'll be able to collect not $1700
but, for example, $1200 or $1400.
We'll need to select a coordinator who'll collect and send money (it would be
nice if Davidovich agrees).

I think this way may be acceptable for participant. $1700 is still a big money
in Russia but now it is not a fantastic amount. I believe, the parents of each
student may find $300-500 for a month if they know for sure that we refund
this money.

Now let's estimate the amount we can collect. Personally I promise to send a
check for $100 as soon as we'll come to some decision.

We have some time to figure out the best and fastest way for transfer It would
be nice if somebody is going to visit Russia and agrees to take money (for the
case, please, respond personally to the coordinator when we'll find him/her).

Fri Oct 24 15:00:41 1997
Simon Klebanov (1982, 4) at klebanov@jax.org:

I completely agree with the previous article. Now we should
send our pledges to Lotvinov (though I had problems with his
e-mail). Then he'll have an idea about the amount and the rest
will have to be fetched by the participants themselves (in fact
they'll pay first and we'll reimburse them the amount we pledge).

If it is fine with the students and teachers let us know and
we'll send our pledges. Then we'll have to identify a person
who'll gather all cheques and will transfer the money (say,
within a month).

Subject: Addition to Kagansky's info
Vadim is right.

For a wire transfer abroad US banks normaly charge
about $25 which does not depend on sending amount.
Russian Banks charge about 1.5--2.5% from the received
ammount. The last fee is probably reasonable and not
avoidable, but $25/per person may have a significant
part of personal contributions.

The best what I see is to find something like a short term
loan in Spb and then pay it off using a single transfer of
collected money.

Vadim Kagansky (74,7) at Kagansky@math.berkeley.edu:

Subject: Re: help 30-ka
Probably Eugene does not know but banks charge money
for every transaction. Recently my bank charged $9 for
receiving $100 from Canada. Amount doesn't matter, its just a
fee for their services. I think they also charge for sending
money and I am sure that Russian banks charge much more.

I believe, there are enough people who are ready
to send $50-100 to our scholl as we did some months ago
but nobody wants that 50% of this money may be lost.

The only reasonable way is to collect checks and transfer
maney at once (as A. Davidovich did it) but there is not
enough time untill October 30 (probably, even today is too
late - it looks like money must pass through, at least,
3 banks, incluning 2 in Russia)

Any idea?

I enjoyed company of people from many generations of 30-dka

Location was beutiful, weather - perfect, and I felt sorry that I had to

I am going to print photos and scan them to place on a website.

Just wanted to thank everyone who didn't chicken out because
of the long trip and gloomy weather forecasts and came for
the yesterday's reunion, all the way from the wilderness of
Baltimore, Kennenbunkport and other remote locations on-
and off- the East Shore (lazy Californians who didn't bother
to book a flight, shame on you!) Hope the event was worth the
long trip. Indeed, how could it possibly be otherwise, if the
food was delicious (again, thanks to everyone who cooked and/or
brought the supplies, sooner or later); drinks, conversations
and outfits exquisite, gentlemen dandy, ladies beautiful; the
ocean warm, the weather sunny, and the organisation perfect (sic!).

Special praise to the guest-of-honor, Galina Semenovna
Klimovitskaya, who was the center of attention for the
whole afternoon.

And, to my personal opinion, we were more than just a bunch
of russian-speaking people having a couple of BEARs ; despite
the differences in age, profession, gender and marital status,
we do share more than just the native language.

Hope the Sunwood get-together will not be the last, and may be
we can even make such events more or less annual (or even seasonal,
who knows?)

(http://www.mapquest.com/) lists it as an attraction.

Anyway, here are the directions:

Take Rt. 495, LIE (Long Island Expressway) East to Exit 62, Stony
Brook (when on the ramp, follow the signs to Stony Brook). This
manoeuvre will put you on Nicolls Rt (Rt. 97) North. Go all the
way down the Nicolls Rd. till it ends at the T-junction with
Rt. 25A (approx. 9-10 miles. For your orientation: there'll be two
major intersections of Nicolls Rd. with Rt. 25 (go straight there;
you need 25A!) and with Rt. 347. Just where the Nicolls Rd.
ends, you'll pass the streetlight (Northern entrance to the
University) and then go under the railroad bridge).

Now: make left from Nicolls Rd. to Rt. 25A and then right to Quaker
Path at the first streetlight (you'll only have to go for about
1000 feet on 25A). After 2 or 3 stop signs (~1 mile) the road
forks; keep to the left, you need to switch to the Mount Grey Rd.
(there'll be a sign showing which way to go for the Quaker Path
and for the Mount Grey).

Once on the Mount Grey Rd., you're close. Go through the stop
sign (intersection with the West Meadow Rd.), and start looking
to your left; Sunwood is about 1000 feet from there;- a red brick
gate and a sign. Make left into the gate, and go all the way down
the lane. There'll be a small parking lot to your right at the
end. Park your car, and take a path to the left from the lane,
towards a little building of exotic design which hosts a WC;
towards the merry voices and the smells of food.

The official opening ceremony will start at noon.

See you there!

        - Victor

Subject: picnic FAQs
Here is the summary:

Q. How do we get to Sunwood, Stony Brook?
A. I'll post the directions later. For those who can't
drive, there are two options:
a. Take train (LIRR) from Penn Sta to Stony Brook (Port
Jefferson branch); we'll shuttle to Sunwood from the
platform (it's about 4 miles).
b. We can arrange carpools from the city. NYC car owners,
please volunteer; give me your name/phone so I can make
it public.

Q. Why Sunday, not Saturday?
A. For Saturday, Sunwood is already reserved by another
group.

Q. Why picnic, not restaurant?
A. The majority voted for picnic. To my opinion, it's
much more relaxed and entertaining form of gathering
than just a dinner in the restaurant, and it makes it
easier to communicate with different people. And,
Sunwood IS a GREAT PLACE, believe me.

If you have any other questions/comments, please let
us know.

Subject: picnic update
Hi everyone.

Here is the plan:

* Date:   Sunday, September 21
* Place: Sunwood, Stony Brook (~1 hr drive from NYC)
* Ticket price: about $15 per person, including food.

Some background/advertisement: Sunwood is a huge estate
(or rather a small park) on the Long Island Sound beach
donated to the University by some wealthy philanthropist.
University doesn't have money to maintain it in a proper
order, so it looks a bit like Pushkin or Pavlovsk parks
after the war, before they've been restored. It does have
proper bathroom facilities though, for which the remains
of the burned villa were used. In the 'developed' part of
the park, there is a place for a bbq with a couple of tables,
a nice lawn for volleyball, and a beach at our disposal
(pebbles, not sand; sorry). All that we can rent for a
symbolic price of $40 per hour.

Please send email to me or Zhenia Baron (barone@pfizer.com)
if you plan to come, or call me 516-654-8663 (h),
516-632-8228 (o), or Zhenia 212-733-5604.

Now: we need your help to make it happen.

1. Does anyone have camping stoves (Coleman or similar)?
2. A big bbq grill (and a large car to bring it over)?
3. Pots and bowls to cook/serve food
4. Music instruments
5. Sports gear (volleyballs, net, badmingtone, etc.)
6. Any other ideas for entertainment?

We also need volunteer(s) to coordinate food. As we envision
the arrangements, everyone will either bring eatables or cook
on the spot (shashl%k, etc.) Zhenia has volunteered to buy
alcohole except beer (anyone wants to take care of beer?)
We need someone else to buy paper dishes and plastic silver
+ cups, garbage bags, etc.

Important: because it's outdoors, we depend on the weather.
So, the plan is to stay put till say Thursday, and if the
forecast is very pessimistic, then switch to the restaurant
Saturday night.

Please respond asap; there isn't much time left till 21-st.

Hello, people!

This July, I traveled to Piter and visited Aron Ruvimovich
Maizelis twice (one time with Kostya Asinovsky, the other with
Valya Palshin). This is a small report on the visit.

I knew about his illness and was worried to find him in a bad
shape. Turns out, to my surprise, that he hadn't almost changed
since the time I graduated (1989). Apparently, he recovered from
his illness except that he speaks a little more slowly. Recently,
he learned how to use a computer (he has a 386 or 486 at home),
and he is quite proficient with Norton commander, lexicon and
such like. He is energetic as always and remembers all his
students; he was telling us a lot of stories about students that
graduated as early as in the 60th.

It seems that he is contemplating writing a book and is at the
preliminary stage of gathering material, but that's just a
speculation. Also, he wrote a 16 page article for the upcoming
journal dedicated to the school anniversary. The article is about
his teaching techniques. Although, he doesn't have an Internet
access, he knows about our bulletin board and has the list of all
participants. I asked him to write a message for the list, and he
did that. I enclose the transliterated version below; I retained
the original spelling where I could.

Dear fellow 30 school list members!

I've gotten two valuable ideas from Eli Kislyuk (1981, 7).

The first one is to add the "date of last update" field to each
record. This will be done from now on. So you'll have to send
updates from time to time to avoid looking relict.

The second one I do not care much about, but I've implemented it
all the same: the birthday field. It is now there, so everyone
who wants to make his or her birth date public domain is
welcome to. I only ask that due to technological reasons,
please enter your whole record as you want it to appear in the
list, not just name and birth date.

Subject: 1st Reunion Report
Last Friday, August 8, in the afternoon about 60 graduates of
38/30 School, graduated from 1966 to 1995, with their families,
took part in the very first joined picnic, which was organized
in Israel by efforts of "Keren 30" - young but not unknown
fund in support of the School, its teachers, pupils and graduates.

Our meeting took place in Khurshat Limor, southern to Haifa.
Israeli graduates, two former School teachers, a graduate from
St.Petersburg and a graduate from Moscow, who become aware of
the meeting only a day before and came especially for this event,
have participated. Good mood, as well as good weather, accompanied
us during the picnic. One of the exciting moments were to watch the
people who didn't meet for 10, 20 or even 30 years!

Participants were given a possibility to check their data in
Israeli graduates' list, look for former classmates in the
Internet database and join it if they do not appear.

Up-to-date activities of "Keren 30" were presented by the Fund
coordinator and more donations were received. We have also
exchanged several ideas regarding the future.

Some features of graduates' club or association, which will be
established in conjunction or instead of the Fund, were outlined,
and we started to learn formal requirements for such a structure.
Number of people who agreed to help the coordinator with further
activities rose to five.

It was agreed that we shall continue with those events. Another
meeting, probably of different kind, is about to take place
within a few months, maybe in Sukkot holydays (mid-October).

You can find more details, names and pictures on the web page
of "Keren 30" at http://www.ma.huji.ac.il/~dima/benjamin/30-ka/fund/

Hello tri-staters and affiliates,

Weekend 6-7 sounds terrific,- thanx Zhenia for taking the
initiative. I'll vote for Sunday 7th rather than Saturday,
and for Russian restaurant rather than Bear Mntn. I also
have smth. else to suggest; Sept. 7th is date for the NY
Century bike ride. It starts and ends in Central Park, and
one has a choice of 40, 75 and 100 mile distance. It starts
at 6:00am Sunday (ouch!); reg. fee is $35, for which they
provide food at the rest stops and the event T-shirt. If you
ever did Bike NY,- that one is different, not so crowded
so you can go at your own pace, and beter organized,- or
at least that's what they claim.

This endevour is in no way the substitution for the social
gathering, but rather an addition for those who might be
interested. I'm gonna do it anyway; let's form "30 school

Hi, folks!
This message is primarily for American alumni.
Shame on us. Israeli alumni are going to meet on August 8. Instead of
Manilov's projects (how to invite teachers, how to go all together to
mother-Russia) they just have a picnic for people who can make it.
I don't blame anybody, but I envy Israelis.

Because New York is a "middle point", we need a volunteer from Big Apple.
Let try to make it simple:

1. Choose any Saturday night (have month or two ahead).
2. Ask people to say "Yes, I come" or "No, sorry, I cannot make it."
3. Count people and make a reservation.
4. Ask people to send money ($50 is enough, I believe), if a reservation
cannot be made using credit card.

And that is it. Volunteer from New York, please replay.

Subject: 30's fund
Hi, everybody. Want to make a quick personal remark regarding
money fund issue. After reading the messages about establishing
this fund I was glad that we finally could do something good to our
school teachers in return for their efforts to make people out
of us (and, in most cases, they surprisingly succeeded, didn't they?)
I was going to send some amount to the fund (not hundreds bucks, but
as much as a recent student can). However, after this ugly brawl
on the BB has started, I'm not as excited about the idea.
Cursing each other shows just how poorly educated are those who do
so, nothing more. Unfortunately, it kills confidence as well. The recent
letter by Alexander Gutman regarding "some" Pavel Exarkhopoulo just
showed the worst example possible of such style. Sorry, I've changed
my mind and not going to participate.
If Lenya Ioffe will be collecting money again, I'll be glad to give
it to him - just write to my address, please.

Thanks for the attention. Denis

PS. Please, don't try to post letters regarding me on the BB or on
the mailing list - I'm not subscribed to either of them and read
it on a rare occasion, so they (the letters) won't reach the goal
but will take up server space and your time.

Subject: Israeli 30ka support fund - "Keren 30"
Dear friends, 30ka alumni,

I am glad to inform you that Israeli 30ka support fund was
founded last Friday. Its name is "Keren 30" (in Hebrew "keren"
is "fund"). Account number is 12-747-492441 of Bank Hapoalim.

I have sent the detailed e-letter to all Israeli 30ka graduates,
whose e-addresses I found in the web list of Boris Kozintsev.
In this letter I informed how to donate to this fund and other
details. If someone of Israeli fellows didn't receive it, let me
know by e-mail or by telephone (see below).

Obviously, the money would be send to SPb in mid-June. During
five first days we have gathered 1,650.00 shekels (about
US$ 485.00). There was donations of following fellows:

Babushkin Anatoly (1976, 2);
Fialkov Dmitry    (1979, 2);
Khaikovich Boris  (1984, 4);
Khaikovich Lev    (1986, 5);
Dysin Benjamin    (1991, 2);
anonymous (1991, 2)
and mine.

I was speaking to many fellows by telephone and understood that
most of them wants to participate and to help to our alma mater and,
first of all, to our teachers.

If you are not from Israel and would like to make your donation to
"Keren-30", please inform me before by e-mail. But I think, for
our american friends would be better to do it directly to your
fund, which is managed by Sasha Davidovich.

I have a list, which includes 75 Israeli 30ka graduates. Some
records in Boris Kozintsev's list are not updated. Please inform me
about your changes (phone number and e-mail). If you know someone
from Israel who is not included to BK's list, inform them about the
fund and advise to contact me.

Subject: Money
I am taking the liberty to express my opinion regarding the "Money for the
School" issue.

1. I disagree with the idea to present the Fond as some kind of "Western Aid"
to an undeveloped structure. I haven't been in Russia for 6 years and hardly
ever plan to show up back there, but I have all respect in the world for the
folks out there, including a big number of my friends and former classmates.
I don't consider myself being a "smart one", a "reachee uncle" or whoever
else, even in spite of my "6 figure" incomes. I believe, and I know, and I'm
glad to realize that a lot of acquaintances of mine back in Russia are more
successful than I am, make more $$$ and live far more interesting and
fulfilling lives than I do here on the outskirts of the "capital of the world".
2. One of the greatest discoveries I've made for myself as a result of my
"migration" is the fact that there is a civilized world and there are other
methods of doing stuff than acting "yavochn'im put'em", as the old-timer
Kirschner used to say.
3. I do feel personally obliged to contribute into preserving and expanding
of the great traditions of the place, which gave so much to me and literally
shaped me up for the roughness of life - the school. And when there will be a
Russian-based official fond, properly managed and maintained - I'll be more
than happy to perform my duty of financial support.
4. I don't rule out an emergency situation or a case of dealing with personal
matters when I would go around and send some small amount of cash through
channels, not affiliated with IRS, customs or any other official structures.
And I hope there will never be an emergency at the School that would prompt
me to do so.

Stas.

Subject: Fund
Dear Fellows:

I would like to make a few remarks about our discussion
about the fund.

1. We are all different people. Some of us idolize our
school and name our country "The Motherland" or the former
Motherland. This part of our community thinks about preserving/
restoring the school spirit. But believe or not, the others
think that our school was the least evil within the evil empire,
where they were lucky enough to meet good friends and just a few
outstanding teachers.

2. In these conditions, it is, actually, a great art to make
people comfortable and willing to give money. Probably,
the classical scene from the "Heart of a Dog" by Mikhael Bulgakov
is the most adequate piece to describe the reaction of many
people when they read letters about "spirits" and "SHNO insignia".
I will cite in transliteration:
"Professor, voz'mite zhurnaly v pomosh detyam Germanii po
poltinnichku"... -"Net, ne voz'mu"-..."Vy ne sochuvstvuete
detyam?!"- ..."Sochuvstvuyu"...-"Tak pochemu zhe vy ne voz'mete..?"-
-"Ne khochu".

Please, fellows, agression does not help. People must
feel comfortable doing charity. Surviving a piece of our
history, makes this a very delicate problem.

With best regards,
Yuli

Dear Senya, Pasha and all other potential writers!

This is my immediate reaction upon some of the most
recent messages. Please, don't make everybody
read this kind of ........ (pardon me!) anymore.
Don't you understand it could hurt other people's
feelings? If you wish to get all squared with
somebody - please, do it privately.

Now, about the money. That's not money to spoil
(or not to spoil) a person but person's motivation.
However, it's not up to anybody to judge the spoiling
degree of each other. But it's up to anybody to
decide whether to give or not to give money to the
fund in question and request some control over the
money given to it.

Anyway, to control something we have first to have
something to control. And please, let's not get crazy!
There is nothing to fight about. There is just
everybody's good will. And trust me - the letter
from Michael Chepovetsky was good enough to wake it
up wherever it was possible.

Thank you for your attention, and have a good day.

Marina.

Subject: 30-ka, money
Dear fellows who care for the matter!

It is perfectly fine to be rational and implement
good rational suggestions suggested to us by
our rationally minded experienced friends. Money
spoils. Money becomes a source of mistrust,
animosity and even outright confrontation. It is a
great idea to try to avoid all that.
The other side of the coin, however, is (and was)
this very common debilitating intelligenzia
disease, feverish thinking complicated by action
paralysis. Well learnt. Doesn't work...

I have a relative who is just stingy. He always
finds an excuse why not to give money to his
child (The child doesn't work => money not earned
will spoil him. The child does work => he doesn't
need money, etc.). Everything is pretty simple, he
just doesn't want to give money Period
Those who are genuinly cautios and serious
adults may join upon fulfilling their suggestions
(and relieving their anxiety)
The untouchable won't be touched anyway.

Yes, I do feel good by giving! I had a great time
and I'd like both to help to relieve life to our
teachers and to give a chance to enjoy the same
kind of life we had to younger generations -
eventually it creates a more pleasent psycho-
social environment to ourselves. I do want to
know how my money is spent and exercise some
control over what it is spent on. I will be upset if
the money is wasted or even stollen.
I will, however, be much more upset to find out
that money was not available when it was really
needed.

If the money is not spent perfectly I won't give a
shit. I will give money.

                                          Senia

P.S. This letter is hardly intended to recruit. It is
even less intended to offend. It just helps me to
vent my anger with the paralysing inaction.

Folks,

Long time ago I proposed an idea of financial support for the school.
Unfortunately, we couldn't organize anything "serious" due to the lack of
people willing to help. I don't want to start another agitation campaign,
I merely want to provide some more info to those alumni who care.

1) I'm going to send CASH
2) It'll be delivered by one of our graduates (who'll be visiting us shortly)
to V.L.Il'in personally. V.L. with another teachers can decide what to do
with the money better than anybody else.
In the absence of any formal means, this seems to be a good way.
3) If you plan to participate, please send me a short message with the figure
you are going to donate. If I get a lot of such messages (doubtful), I will
have to open a special bank account and will notify all the senders.
Otherwise, you can send me personal checks; I'll cash them and "send" the
   money to the destination.
4) I realize that many people visit the BB rarely, so please spread this
   message around.
5) I'll also send this message to the folks who had responded to the original

Latest Press Release from the Space Telescope Institute:

An unprecedented series of observations from the Hubble Space Telescope
has revealed a new surprises about comet Hale-Bopp.

The comet thrilled astronomers as it displayed unusual outbirsts of
increased
brightness. By using a spectrograph to analyse ultraviolet light from the
comet, scientists leaned that the components of its frozen solid nucleus
apparently are composed from different materials that astronomers would
have expected. They found traces of proteins, fatic acids, carbohydrates
and , surprisingly, some traces of enzimes typically found in yeast.
The findings were detailed in the last Friday publication in the journal Science ,
just in time for the comet's rendezvous with the sun on April 1st when it
peaks in brightness.

These findings provide new information about the composition and
structure of comets, which are believed to be remnants from the formation
of the solar system, about 4,6 billion years ago. So, leaning more about
the comets can provide important information about the materials and
processes that formed the solar system. According to latest findings the
solid center of the comet is most likely a muschy mixture of frozen chemical
components, the most abundunt of which is probably a frozen milk.

By studying images taken with the Hubble telescope, the astronomers
have estimated that it's nucleus may be 30 to 40 kilometers in diameter
thus representing the biggest chunk of an ice-cream ever seen.

Hello. I didn't give up the idea of the reunion, just got distructed
for a while. Anyway, what I suggest is the following. To get started,
we need a volunteer for treasurer to collect money. Then we set a
tentative date (in summer?), and whoever is interested should mail
a check for the amount yet to be specified to the treasurer or directly
to the bank, and an email or letter to me with his/her email/phone #
for the record. Then after the deadline (say, 2-3 weeks before the
selected date) we close the list, reserve a restaurant and finally
have our reunion. The things to think about:

1. How much do we charge. That depends on whether we want (and are able)
to invite our teachers for the event. Of course, it will be great if
we could do it. The road blocks:
  - unfortunatelly, we wan't be able to invite everyone. So, we'll
have to choose. Now: different people might have different priorities,
and there is an ethics problem; we'll insult the ones who don't get
    invited.

  - even if we collect enough money and decide to go ahead, it
involves much more effort than the rest of the enterprise.
    Any volunteers?

2. I think it is possible to open a special account, so people can
send their contributions directly to the bank. I can check into that,
although I definitely don't want to be a tresurer.

Please let me know what you think about it. Let's get it off the
ground!

        - Victor

Subject: position available in Jerusalem
I am sorry if it's not the most appropriate place for this
note but maybe it can help to someone.

Deapartment of Medical Biophysics and Nuclear Medicine
of Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem has a job
position for a scientific research programmer.
They are looking for somebody with a background of doing
computer programming in medical/scientific research so
this is not the general sort of technical/commercial
programming job - they want someone with a math/science
background and preferably experience of mathematical
modelling and image processing.
Those interested are welcome to contact Chana Freedman
at , tel in Jerusalem 6777148,
fax +972-2-6421203 (tell her that you got the information
from me)
Good luck! Luda

Subject: web site news

Dear fellow 30/38 school graduates,

The following has been changed on our web site:

  (1) It is now possible to view a subset of
      the sorted-by-year list at
      http://www.math.umd.edu/~bak/30/search.cgi

Therefore you can quickly tell whether your
year have changed without having to download the
      whole list.

Note that you can bookmark your query or,
following Yuriy Koblents-Mishke, feed it to
      the "url-minder" at http://www.netmind.com/URL-minder/new/

  (2) Messages posted in 1996 were removed from
the Bulletin Board (but are still accessible
      from the link there).

  (3) For those of you in the northern hemisphere --
      the spring is coming!

Sincerely,

Subject: Happy New Year 1997, proposals on BB
I send warm greetings and congratulations on the New Year 1997
to all alumni and, in particular, teachers of our school.

I would like to propose, simultaneously, a couple of ideas
connected to the Bulletine Board.

Dear Friends:
Actually, for every e-mail list and the bulletine board,
certain rules exist.

1. The most important is that messages
which are not connected to a list or BB should not be sent.

2. Also, a very important rule on using BB is that private type
messages, comminicating information about health of induviduals
related to community, should not appear without permission
by these induviduals. These messages should not be send to
e-mail lists as well, but can be distributed only in personal
e-mail communication.

3. Next, if one sends a poem or a story, one should quote the
author, and respect the copyright, but see rule 1.

4. A few technicalities. Messages should not be submitted
twice. One message with two subjects is better than two with
one subject each. Also, it is better not to send messages
with more than 72 symbols in a single line.

Thank you very much in advance for considering these
rules for BB.

My best wishes.
Yuli Lyanda-Geller
