Hi,

My name is Misha Davidson. I never had a pleasure of attending
school

establish
contact him. I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me
in
locating him.

Dania must have graduated from school in 1988, then studied in
"Pervom
Medicinskom" institute. He immigrated to Israel in or around 1994
and
now is doing his medical residency. If you have any information
about
him (especially a phone number), I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your help.

Happy New Year,

Friends,

Thank you so much to all of you who signed the "move on" petition. You should
be proud of yourself. We together accomplished a lot! You were one of more
than a quarter-of-million of people who did that. And look, what a difference
did you make! The lawmakers got the message. They realized, that it is time
to get back to the business they were hired (or elected, like some of us
prefer to call it) to do. As a result, the Asian economy shows signs of
improvement. Hopefully it will transfer to the improvements in Russian
economy as well. Even the most conservative analysts admit that the message

Vadim Kagansky (74,7) at kagansky@math.berkeley.edu:

Subject: New Book by M.L. Shifman - would do you like to have it?
Dear friends,

Michail L'vovich Shifman just published a book (" Posobie dlia
uchitilej po resheniju fizicheskih zadach"). No doubts, it is an
excellent book that can help our children to learn Physics.
It is also a great memory for us all who graduated from 30dka.

American 30-ka Fund is organizing the charity subscription to Shifman's
book for American and Canadian alumni. As we know, Keren fund is
doing the same in Israel. This subscription money will be send to Russia
to cover actual cost of books, organizational and mailing expenses and
some small honorarium for Shifman.

The publisher prints the book by portions of 500 copies.
Printing of the first portion was sponsored by the City
Authorities, and all those copies went to the School.
Unfortunately, the printing has been put on halt, because
there is no one to finance it. The publisher is ready to keep
printing the book, if someone agrees to sponsor the work.

Right now Michail Lvovich needs to pay $300 to get the second
500-copy portion.

Everyone is welcome to buy one or several copies, or simply
to donate money specifically to help with publishing costs for this
book. Please, send your checks and your mailing address (with note
about number of copies) to:

                     Simon Klebanov
                     P.O. Box 603
                     Bar Harbor, ME 04609

Although the printing in Russia is cheaper than in the United States
and even $10 would cover the printing and shipping, we expect that
buyers will send a little bit more, for example, $20 - less than the
regular price for the textbook in US.

The difference will help to cover publishing costs of as many
additional copies as possible. We are also planning to use any
remaining amount as a honorarium for Michail L'vovich to compensate,
in part, the long time Michail L'vovich spent to write the book and to
organize publication.

Please pass this information to your relatives and friends who might be
interested in buying the book and to those 30-dka alumni who is not on
this e-mail list.

We would like also to remind you that the American 30-ka fund
just started to collect 1998 annual contributions to help the
retired and acting teachers to survive during the hard times
in Russia and for the Olympiad "Baltic Way". We are planning
to deliver your donations and subscription money to the school
in the beginning of December.

I am a former student of T.I.K. (1996,1), and I can say
that the original meaning of "culinary college" was neither
"easy cash vs. honest work" nor "those who can vs.
those who can not".

Her usual argument in my time was: "Maybe you cannot
solve a problem which require a sudden insight - not all people
are gifted enough, or you just had a terrible headache that day...
But there are problem which require technical skills and
understanding of math - and you can learn to solve all these
problems, if you study hard. You may afford yourself not solving
those insight-requiring problems, but you may not afford yourself
being lazy and uneducated - if you do, 30ka is not for you, the
culinary college is your school"

And this is maybe the best thing I ever learned :-)
Cheers,

I am quite a bit suprprised by the transformation
of the "culinary college" idiom. I've heard it a lot
in the late eighties (though not directly from
Ms. Kursish), and in that time it absolutely did not
mean "easy cash vs. honest work" dichotomy. It merely
denoted "those who can vs. those who can't", or
"extraordinary vs. ordinary".

Besides, in terms of the expected income mathematical
school graduates obviously beat culinary college alumni
hands down.

Dear friends,
Please find enclosed a brief report on the celebration of
Kursish’s anniversary.

The celebration took place in the school building, the number of
guests was about 300. T.I. arrived in a white Limousine of the
type that are used by Arabian sheikhs-as long as three normal cars.
She was escorted by a driver and a guard. Those who saw her coming
out of this car lost their ability to speak. The celebration
started with demonstration on video the fragment of speech of her
former pupil Vladimir Il’in (now the teacher of mathematics in
30 school) in Moscow on the ceremony of receiving the award
«Teacher of Russia». On this ceremony he suggested to applaud in
honor of his teacher T.I. The people in Moscow were applauding
(including the Prime Minister) the guests in Petersburg also
started to applaud and T.I. came in. During the official part
there were congratulations from the leading Universities of
St. Petersburg, city authorities, teachers. Then came greetings
from all graduation years starting from 1958 year and ending by
the year 1998. Almost each of congratulations was accompanied by
small poem or song, a lot of guitars were used. The podium was
covered with flowers. One basket was from Israel club "Keren-30"
The official part ended with the announcement of the present -
a trip to Canary Islands for 10 days.It was a complete surprise
for T.I. Then informal part took place -drinks, contacts etc. And
at last - departure of T.I. in the white Limousine. Next day the
newspaper «Newskoe vremya» published an article «Science or
Culinary College» devoted to T.I.

V.I.Il'in really won this honor name in official concurs among
all russian teachers ( not only teachers of mathematics), and
even got a prise "Khrustal'ny Pelikan".
The official procedure of award was shown on TV in Russia.
Members of SPb 30-school graduates club congratulated him at their
meeting at October 17.
V.I.Il'in is rather busy now with mass-media representatives, but
everybody can send him congratulations in club address
"info@sch30club.spb.ru", where he is co-chairman.
By the way, another co-chairman M.I.Shifman has 62-nd birthday
today.

Subject: Move on!
Friends,

I am using this forum to address mainly the graduates who choose
to establish the residence in the USA. I am looking for your help.

The USA now is in the unprecedented crisis. It is virtually
without a leadership for at least a couple of months.
We are all graduates of the same school. We are all very proud
of it. Having said that, I think that each of us think
differently, has different ideas and a different understanding
of life. As far as I am concern, it is perfectly O’K to think
that it is "high crimes and misdemeanors" to "screw around",
while being a President. I also think that it is perfectly O’K
to be really scared - as I am - that the Orwell’s predictions are
coming true in the USA - that is supposedly in the foundation of
the world democracy. I am scared that the mother is forced to
testify against her daughter, that the friends are forced to
testify against friends - everything goes to achieve the goal of
toppling a democratically elected President.
No matter what your believes are, however, it is important to
realize, that the World cannot afford to keep the USA without
its leadership for so long time. Unfortunately we see the adverse
results of it not even "close to home", but right AT home – the
economy of Russia, while showing a real hope half-a-year ago is
in the shams.
It is completely "up to you" to believe what is the cause and
what is the effect of the world developments. However I doubt
that it is pure coincidense that the sharp downturn in the
world prosperity and "the Lewinsky’s matter" had happened at
the same time.
I am not the only one who thinks that it is time to put this
matter aside and let the leadership (President and a Congress)
to address real issues. There is a bipartisan effort to do it
started by the co-founder of the software company
"Berkeley Systems" (some of us know that company by their
screen savers software). They suggest one pretty attractive
option for every spectrum of believes. They suggest to meet
half-way. I mean that people like me, for example, expect
no less than the immediate trail of K. Starr for his crimes
against humanity. People on the other side of the spectrum want
to do the same thing with B. Clinton. And what the movement
founders are saying is: "forget the vengeance, let’s censure
the President (so he would realize that there is a difference
between a motel room and an Oval Office) and let’s let him do
the job he was hired (elected) to do". I hope that it is
persuasive and acceptable for everybody (unless one is a
politician pursuing one’s own goals).

Now here is how you can help.

1.Go to the WEB site

http://www.moveon.org

2. Read the information there.
3. ADD YOUR NAME AND E-MAIL ADDRESS TO THE PETITION!

It will tale no more than 5 minutes of your time and it might
(literally) save the world!

Thank you.

Folks,

What Yuli just said is exactly correct.

The only real issue is the TOEFL exam. Having graduated
from the #30 easily puts you in the top 10% of the mankind
GRE-wise; TOEFL, however, is a different matter, and you need
a score of 600 or more. Once you have it, consider yourself in;
if you have less than 550 - try harder. 550-600 is a gray area.

The place to start is the Mayakovsky library on the
intersection of Nevsky and Fontanka - they have all the
relevant stuff available, including applications and study
materials. Ask for directions to the "otdel inostrannoy
literatury".

that a salory of Research or Teching assistant

fine for living in the US.

I then shortened this sentence and got a mispelling
"leaving" instead of "living" . Sorry for this.

Subject: PhD programs in the USA
Hi!

This message is addressed to those who have recently
graduated or are about to get a diploma in 1999 from the
Universities/Institutes.

In a recent year, 1998, leading US Universities
became increasingly interested in strong graduate
students -- graduate student is the term analogous
to the russian term "aspirant". Entering a PhD program
in a leading US university and its succesful completion
opens opportunities to start a career in academic/
government US institutions or to join US industry/
finance private sector. In time, it may also bring
the US permanent residence.

Joining any Graduate School requires obtaing
research/teaching assistantship or fellowship
from a corresponding university, which automatically
means tuition waiver-- one need not pay fees for
studying in a graduate school. Decisions on fellowships/
assistantships are made on a basis of merits/applications.

The characteristic scale of Assistanship/Fellowship
is 1000-1300 $ per month. One need not additional sourses
of money for leaving.

The deadlines for applications in most of Universities
is January. To apply, one needs to pass tests like
TOEFL/ GRE. Instructions can be presumably found
in libraries or over the internet. The application
fee is around 50$ in each of Graduate Schools.
Sometimes, one may appeal to wave the application fee
citing dramatic economic situation in Russia.

Several lists of best Graduate Schools can be found over
the Internet.

If someone is interested, I would be happy to
advise you on the subject.

As deadlines are in January, for future applicants
it is worth starting today.

Good luck.

Dear friends,

My name is Sergei Voitenko (1967, 3), I work at the
St.Petersburg Chamber of Notaries as the chief of information
and computer department.

I want to inform you about creating 30th school Graduates Club
in SPb. The goals are the same as existing graduate unions have -
to help the school mostly. Now we have about 100 members of the
Club with 15th persons in the Board. Cochairmen of the Club are
M.L.Shifman (1954), A.M.Eljashevich (1955) and V.L.Iljin (1968).
The Board together with 30th school teachers and administration
had a joint meeting in May where first turn needs of the school
were discussed and listed. Legal documents of the Club as
noncommercial organization (Ustav etc) are presented to SPb
Department of Justice for official registration in Russia. More
information you can find in applied letter of invitation and on
the web-site .

I am going to visit USA from July 31 till August 23, 1998 with my
colleague, Commercial Law professor of SPb University. We'll stay
in New York and have plans to visit Portland (Maine) and
Washington DC.

As the Club Board member I got the task (from the Board) to
establish contacts with interested graduates in USA (in first
turn with 30-ka Fund founders) to discuss possibilities of
creating official Fund with taxes privileges for contributors
under USA legislation. So I am open for contacts in mentioned
cities, where we have places to stay for 1-2 days, and in
Hartford, Boston, Philadelphia, where we have not, but hope
that they can appear.

I am open for any occasions SPb-NY and NY-SPb too. Besides I
shall have with me search-information system with full
updated DB in Russian and SPb legislation for official spreading
in Universities and other organizations.

The school works in usual hard manner. There are some organizing
difficulties, not so serious. Warm greetings and best wishes to
all graduates send M.L.Shifman and V.L.Iljin.

==================================================================
                  Dear graduates of 30-ka!

Half of the year ago on 100 anniversary of the foundation
of 30th physical and mathematical gymnasium celebration the
idea of Graduates Association creation was discussed.
At 21st of March, 1998 the Club of 30th school graduates
was established. This have been done by 70 graduates of
different years - from 1951 till 1995. Among founders were
those, who learned in usual and then mathematical school | 30
at Srednyi prospect, in physical school | 38 near Tuchkov
bridge, and in physico-mathematical school | 30 at Schevchenko
street.
Created new social organization is named by the club,
because this name in a most exact manner shares its main aim -
intercourse. School graduates found their calling in very
different kinds of activity, they live not only at different
cities, but at different countries, and all of them remember
their school, their teachers, their class-mates. Anywhere
graduates even from different years have met, the words УI
graduated 30-kaФ, as the words УWe are of one blood with youФ
from Maugly fairy-tale, serve as password, remove
psychological barriers and let to find a common language in
counted minutes. We need each other, we need to save
connection with the house, from which walls we went out into
adult life, and with teachers, who gave us not only their
knowledge, but a part of their sole too.
We want Club to be organization which help to adjust
information exchange among graduates, contacts of graduates
with themselves, school teachers and pupils, organization,
where every graduate could find partners in perspective
undertaking and in difficult time to get necessary support,
organization which capable to give effective help to the
school and her teachers, especially those who left teaching
for reasons of health or age.
The lawyers - graduates of our school - are preparing
documents, which let us to carry out state registration of the
Club. In the middle of April the project of this documents
will be submitted on wide discussion. At May 23, common
meeting of Club members will take place, where the documents
should be approved.
The Club Web-site is now opening into Internet.
Preparation started for the school museum creating.
Connections with foreign associations of 30th school
graduates are establishing. In Israel such association works
yet, in USA one is organizing.
We start to create the graduates Fund - noncommercial
international organization appointed to attract and collect
means for realization serious projects, such as a project of
moving school in new building, adequate to XXI-century physico-
mathematical school.
The work of the Club is coordinated by Club Board of
administration, elected on Constituent Assembly. Cochairmen of
the Board are Mikhail Lvovich Shifman (1954 year graduate),
Alexei Mikhailovich Eljashevich (1955) and Vladimir
Leonidovich Iljin (1968).
We build the work of our Club on the following
principals:
     Democracy
Approving of significant solutions comes over wide
discussion, in which all members of the Club can participate.
The vote of every member presented not only personally, but by
post, fax or e-mail will be accounted.
     Open policy
All Board of administration meetings are open and all
decisions approved by the Board may be found on the Club Web-
site. For members without access to Internet the main
decisions will be send by post. All information about the size
of Club members anonymous financial fees and about Club
expenses is efficiently published on the Web-site. Every Club
member can check, is his fee accounted or not: the sum of his
fee will appear in Web-site under his personal code, which is
known only by himself and paymaster of the Club.
     Solidarity
Every Club member renders assistance to other ones within
his powers. When we shall be united and combine our efforts,
we shall be able to help each other and to our school more
effective.
We invite all graduates of 30th school and 38th physico-
mathematical school to enter the Club and to send your desires
on directions of Club activity.
To became a member of the Club you can

of the various meetings of 30-ka (which seem to have
happily involved some of those from 38-ya).

Does anyone know if there have been any plans of a re-union
meeting for the 1973 graduants of 38-ya or was it all
part of the 4 April meeting of 30-ka?

I wish to hear about/from somebody from 38/1973-e or
some of our teachers. BTW, is there anywhere a list of
staff currently working at 30-ka (sorry if I am not
careful in browsing), or some contact links to the teachers
who have worked at 30/38?

Cheers,
Sasha

Privet!

I was delighted to learn that my web-site, the Museum of
Soviet Calculators, has been mentioned in this forum, and
linked from the school's web-site.

I'm an Australian collector of electronic calculators
manufactured in the former Soviet Union, and would encourage
any of you to visit my site and, of course, provide any further
information that you can. I am keen to buy more calculators
for my small collection, so if you have one of these that you
wish to sell - please let me know. I'm safe to deal with, and
have many references - both Russian and other. I try to offer
very attractive prices for these calculators.

If you DO visit the site, make sure you read "The Ballad of
Igor and Vlad" - an amazing small-world story, showing how a
guy in Australia (me) can re-unite old school friends from
Russia.

Here's the URL; I hope you visit...

Misha,

I tried to send my reply directly to you because I have no intention
of opening a discussion - this is my opinion, I'll stick with it and
I am not trying to change yours (or somebody's else). Since the
delivery failed and I deem necessary to let you know
what I think, I have no other option but to post this message on BB.

Please think about what you've written. You want more letters about 30ka.
About what specifically? "About 30ka" is an abstraction. If somebody
writes about a crack in a school's wall - it's about school and if about
our alumnus health problem - it is not? Why we are so callous that we want
to keep in touch with other alumni but hear only good news? Why we find
time and money to get together and socialize and please ourselves but
not to help the ones in need?

The very recent example: how many former Il'in's pupils replied to my
message about VL's needs? Yes, we collected money so he can buy his
medicine for more than a year (if a year from now the price stays the
same). But out of 9 people who donated money - no more than 6 his former
pupils. Out of - my very rough estimation - more than 50 registered
(in the US alone). Regrettably, none of the rest seem concern about the
issue (not reading BB or e-mail falls in this category).

A Novel Enzyme Found in CFS Patients May Alter Cellular Processes

Dr. Robert Suhadolnik and his research team at Temple University School of Medicine reported today that studies of patients with
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) have led to the identification of a new human enzyme. Suhadolnik, a professor of Biochemistry
and a member of the University's Fels Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Biology, says of the new findings: "We are
greatly encouraged by the trend we see. All CFS patients tested have this new enzyme, while none of the healthy controls do."
The new findings, reported at a research meeting sponsored by the American Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, are
based on preliminary data from a limited number of patients. However, larger studies are already underway and have attracted
financial support from the National Institutes of Health.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), is a complex illness
characterized by incapacitating fatigue, neurological problems and a constellation of other debilitating symptoms. The cause of the
illness is unknown and, since no drug has been found to be effective against CFS, treatment is limited to alleviating the symptoms.
CFS affects at least 500,000 American adults and children.

The newly discovered enzyme may explain common observations in patients with CFS: an inability to control common viruses (like
Epstein-Barr virus and human herpes virus 6) and an inability to maintain cellular energy. According to Suhadolnik, the viral
pathway in which this newly discovered protein is active, known as the RNase L antiviral pathway, may control both processes.
"This new enzyme in CFS may not function as well as the normal RNase L found in healthy people. It may explain why CFS
patients' bodies have a hard time maintaining the energy necessary for cellular growth. We are hopeful that ongoing further studies
will lead to a better understanding of some other processes at work in this puzzling illness." The new findings add to mounting
evidence of subtle, yet striking, abnormalities found in people with CFS.

"Because the new enzyme has been found in CFS patients but not in healthy controls, it is potentially the basis for a laboratory test
for CFS, which is diagnosed today only through its clinical symptoms," says Dr. Antonio Goncalves, Associate Vice Provost for
Science and Technology at Temple University. The University has filed a patent application for such a test and is seeking a
corporate partner to further develop and license the test. Goncalves and Suhadolnik caution, however, that additional studies of
much larger patient populations are required before the clinical utility of a test can be demonstrated.

This study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and The CFIDS Association of America, the nation's largest and most
active charitable organization dedicated to conquering CFIDS. Other Association funded research will be presented at the
research conference which continues in San Francisco through October 16.

Strok's grand daughter (Stroks used to be his parents'

========================================================

Greetings,

I am searching for information about Oskar Strok,
composer and lyricist of tango music. I have just begun my
inquiries, and my knowledge so far is limited. Here is a
summary of what I have learned:

Strok lived most of his live in Riga, Latvia. He was a
prolific composer of popular music and created more than 300
pieces, mostly tangos, waltzes, and fox-trots. He frequently
wrote his own lyrics, as well. Oskar Strok's music was
enormously popular in Eastern Europe and especially in the
Soviet Union in 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Peter Leschenko, a
singer of incredible talent and popularity, also from Riga,
recorded a large number of Strok's songs in Riga before
the war. Strok was a wonderful pianist and he accompanied
many famous singers who performed in Riga between the two wars.
His songs were performed by all of the superstar Soviet singers,
including Leonid Utyosov and Klavdia Shul'zhenko. Millions of
people knew his songs, danced to his music, fell in love to it
and listened to it when their hearts were broken. I am sure
that many Soviet children were conceived under his music and
therefore he is responsible, in a way, for the birth of
generations of Soviet people. His most famous and most
frequently performed song is "Chyornye Glaza"(Black Eyes)
(not to be confused with "Ochi Chyornye").
He wrote both music and lyrics for this song. The first few
notes and the first words of the song " O eti chyornye glaza..."
are engraved on his tombstone by his granddaughter Tatyana
Strok who still lives in Riga.

After the war, Latvia was occupied by Soviet troops and
Strok was accused by Soviet authorities of being a "bourgeois
ideologist" and his songs, which were still very popular in
Soviet Union, were performed without acknowledgment of the
author of the music. I was told that Strok was even imprisoned
at that time. His music was not published in the postwar years.
There was a period in the 70s when interest to his music
returned, and the one and only Soviet record company, Melodia,
released a collection of his music performed by the company
Ensemble Melodia, conducted by Garanyan. The record became a
big hit and many families still have it, emigrants brought it
here. There were several other recordings in the postwar
period: at least one other LP and a few singles. Strok died in
1975 at the age of 82, a poor and forgotten man. There were no
books written about him, no chapters. I know of two
publications in the Soviet press and was told that there were
couple of articles in Latvian newspapers in the Soviet period.
The information about him is very limited. I hope that I will
know more after I meet with his daughter in Moscow and will
visit his granddaughter in Riga a second time this summer.

Strokh's granddaughter, Tatyana, inherited most of his
archive (or whatever is left of it) and his grand piano which
was manufactured by RONISCH (O with umlaut). I visited Strok's
granddaughter for the first time two weeks ago in Riga. The
family (four people) is very poor and they are moving to a two-
room apartment from the three-room apartment which they can no
longer afford. There is no room for Strok's grand piano in the
new place and it was put on sale. However, there was no
takers. I am afraid that his archive, which is already depleted,
will soon perish.

I am trying to find a home for an Oskar Strok archive
and I am trying to raise funds in order to do it. I want to
place his archive in the public domain, like a Department of
Music or a Music Library, not in private hands, so people will
be able to enjoy and study his music.

I hope that you will find some use for this limited
information. I also hope that you will find something else
about Oskar Strok because he created beautiful music which we
should preserve for people to enjoy.

Please send me any information you have about Oskar Strok.

Thank you in advance.

Subject: need help
Date: Sun, 24 May 1998 22:22:26 +0300 (GMT+0300)
From: Ludmilla Asimov
To: Eli Kislyuk

Hi!

I understand that the medical information is normally confidential
but I hope I have a right to distribute any information about
myself. Especially since now I need all the help I can get. So
feel free to publish anything about me, if I don't state
otherwise. And I apologize for writing in English, by some odd
aberration I type in English much better than in Russian.

So what I wanted to tell you is following. I got diagnosed as CFS
(chronic fatigue syndrome). THis is something that looks like both
the vascular system and the immune system are failing to function.
I have had some sort of a vascular disorder for years, and in
Russia they termed it dystonia and thought that it's all because
of nerves (it is not actually), and it was slowly growing worse
and worse till this winter-spring my health just broke down. The
local doctors can diagnose it but don't know what to do, so I was
just told to get used to live with how it is, and either I manage
by myself or I don't. So far I more like don't, especially since
I am kicked out from the university and can't work.

What it is like? Well, in brief I am very weak, and dizzy, and
have heart and leg pains and lack of breath, and very high and
irregular heart rate, blood pressure either low or the difference
between systolic and diastolic very small, and sometimes blood
circulation in various parts of the body almost stops, and fever,
swollen and painful glands and lymph knots. I have a more detailed
and accurate list of the symtomps and blood tests done for
medically inclined but it's too long to include it here, so if
anybody really needs it they have to request.

In Russia they either try to give sedatives or think it's
infection and treat it with antibiotics which just complete
suppress the immune system and kill the patient. Here they at
least do nothing.

As to the alternative medicine, I've been using it for years, and
by now it has just ceased to help me anymore.

Sometimes I have a better day and can go out for a walk or do some
shopping though haltingly (I even managed to arrive to the last
get-together) but there are also days (more often, unfortunately)
when I can't get out of bed at all. And I don't manage with a lot
of everyday tasks - everything becomes a problem, especially
since I am alone in Israel and came here relatively recently, on
Sukkot 1996 (around a year and a half ago).

Recently a friend of mine has found me a private medical
counsellor who has just made aliyah from the States. She has some
ideas about what to do, and managed to find someone back in the
States who knows of some research done there about CFS. What he
says about the cause is that the body absorbs certain minerals
(primaty magnesium and zinc) from the food or pills into the blood
(so all the blood tests are just fine) but fails to absorb them
into the cells, and in addition there can be also some specific
auto-immune response.

Now my counsellor is trying to reach the people who originally
perform the corresponding research and get their official letters
of opinion in order to at least perform the necessary tests. It
still will be long, expensive and complicated story, and the
success is not guaranteed.

Meanwhile I am not only not improving but even getting worse and
worse.

So any ideas, advises and whatever are welcome and appreciated.
If someone calls me directly at home, be warned that sometimes I
am so unwell that either can't answer the phone at all, or when
I answer it I just fail to understand who with and what about I
am talking, so take it easy if I say strange things.

If someone knows or has a way to find who in Israel does some
research in either CFS, or minerals/vitamins absorption by the
body in general and by the cells in particular, or autoimmune
disorders, please let me know. For me it's really a matter of
life and death.

Thank you very much in advance.

Ludmilla Asimov

After his heart surgery he needs - for the rest of his life - to take a

Maybe, anybody has an idea how and where the tool for building
the enterprize Web - "Power Site enterprize" of Sybase, Inc., -
can be sold (for a price less than in the price-list).
This package was won by my son Michael, as he was victorious
in the computer-soccer trivia quiz organized by Sybase, Inc.,
in Tel-Aviv. However, he serves in the army now, and therefore
he doesn't need such a powerful package...
I thank you in advance...
Yours, Boris S. Medved from Haifa

Subject: software programming job opportunity in USA
Hi, guys. This message is primarily intended for those
living outside of the US and who would like to try to
get in and get a programming job.
Currently the company I'm employed with is seeking for
software programmers, and if you're interested, you can
give it a try. The qualifications that are asked for are
good practical knowledge of C++, Windows programming,
MFC, preferrably new technologies like DirectX, COM.
Working environment mostly is VC++, although Borland is
OK as well. Usually a candidate is asked to provide
resume and a project that would show his programming
skills that he claims to have, and then, if our managers
deem this candidate to be interesting, an exhaustive
technical interview is conducted over the phone. Note:
fluent english is desirable, but isn't a must
(in fact, some of the programmers here could barely
speak or understand english at all when they just came).
You have to have at least a good C++ knowledge to do
that, Windows and MFC experience is a big advantange.
So, if you think you can try or have any questions,
write me at the address above.

Denis

PS If you know of somebody who might be interested and
is a skilled programmer, tell them as well.

Dear Friends,

Benjamin Dysin (1991,2) has sent in his great new
school photographs. Please enjoy them at
http://www.math.umd.edu/~bak/30/photo/bd.

A short comment for the old-timers. The second image is
obviously the new school building at Shevchenko. Glassed
balconies, the stylish crystal cap above the entrance and
the stupid plaque (zoomed in on the first image) are
post-1989 additions. The third picture is taken at the
Shiffman's physics auditorium, and the last one is from the
4th floor smoking room.

Keren-30 Club at elikis@netvision.net.il:

Subject: Keren-30 Club foundation
Dear friends!

Israeli graduates of the 30th and 38th schools decided to set
their own club. Official documents required to register
this club by Israeli authorities were signed in Haifa on
December 12, 1997 by supervision of lawyer Marina Heifets
(1973, b-38). Roman Fridlyand hosted the ceremony.

The formal club founders are:
Boris Samsonovich Medved (1977-90, Teacher),
Alexander Galper (1970, 7),
Roman Fridlyand (1973, b-38)
Anatoly Babushkin (1976, 2),
Yuri Shenderov (1980, 2),
Eli Kislyuk (1981, 7),
Benjamin Dysin (1991, 2).

We are expecting to receive final approvement from the
appropriate authorities in Jerusalem.

Some decisions:

- Every graduate of 30th Gymnasium (30/38 schools) and other
people concidering themselves related to it in some way can be
Club member. Members list is managing by the coordinator,
Eli Kislyuk (elikis@netvision.net.il).

Among club aims you can see:
- mutual help of the club members and related people;
- support of the SPb 30th Gymnasium's teachers, pupils and
graduates;
- cultural, educational and other activities;
- employment and informational support for club members and
related people in Israel.

- The annual fee for members is set to US$ 45 in 1998 in addition
to regular voluntary donations. The "Keren-30" Fund which was
established in May 1997 will be part of "Keren-30" Club.

By the way, the Hebrew word "keren" has a few different meanings:
"fund", "ray", "horn" etc.

Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year and best wishes to everybody!

On behalf of founders of "Keren-30" Club
Eli Kislyuk.
